Famous American Plus-Size Models
Before the short descriptions of plus size supermodels of America, the point is to be noted that maximum of these models
are not directly entered into plus size modeling. Many of them have started their career as straight model and as they
gain weight or suffered from diseases like anorexia and became fat then they subsequently directed towards plus size
modeling, because they did not have any other alternative.
Another thing I must say in this issue, plus size models are not fat models without shape. You must have seen that some
of the US magazines though popular for some specific groups or communities are still fighting to launch their size 18 or
even size 20 models as supermodels, but they are getting thrown out from the actual fashion modeling industries. But I have
seen that some of those models have superb shapes may be they have size 18 or 20 but still fighting to find their identities
as clothing models. On the other hand many US women are not size 14 to 16, but are more, like size 18 to 20. They do not
get their fashion fabrics from online shops. So, here is a controversy and dilemma that exists in between plus size modeling
and plus size model recruiters of fashion stores.
However here goes short descriptions about some plus size supermodels of America:
Emme (Melissa) Aronson
She is acknowledged as the first plus-size model to achieve widespread recognition in the United States. She hosted
Fashion Emergency and has appeared on most major US TV networks. She was named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful
People" twice (1994 and 1999) and Glamour magazine's "Woman of the Year" (1997). She has a collectible doll named for her,
and bearing her likeness.
Barbara Brickner
She has become one of the most internationally familiar faces in plus-size modeling over her 10+ year career. Featuring
constantly in MODE Magazine and producing many of its most enduring images, she went on to become the preferred model of
many plus-size designers; most notably for Italian company Elena Miro for several years, appearing by herself in their
iconic calendar created in 2000. Also in 2000, Brickner launched a line of plus-size maternity clothing named BB Maternity,
sold through U.S. department stores.
Kate Dillon
She began her career as a size 6 with Elite NYC, but after overcoming health issues (anorexia) eventually relaunched her
career as a U.S. size 14 plus-size model. Dillon enjoyed a fast rise to fame via the covers and editorials of MODE
Magazine, and has since notched up scores of advertising campaigns for top plus-size clothing retailers in the world.
Dillon has appeared in several language editions of Vogue magazine, and has been photographed for high fashion magazines
and campaigns by such photographers as Patrick Demarchelier, Helmut Newton, Francesco Scavullo, Albert Watson and Mario
Testino, and has appeared in advertising for clients well outside of the usual plus-size carrier such as Gucci, Isabella
Rossellini's 'Manifesto' perfume, and Nine West. Dillon was a featured guest during season 3 of the popular US network show
America's Next Top Model, talking to contestants about body image and self-esteem.
Natalie Laughlin
She was the first plus-size model to have an advertisement feature on a billboard in New York's Times Square, an honor
repeated four times by client Liz Claiborne. Laughlin was also the first plus-size model to appear in the U.S. edition
of Glamour magazine.
Crystal Renn
She is the most recent plus-size model to garner international appeal and has set a new standard for accomplishment.
Like Dillon, Renn suffered from anorexia and became a plus-size model after regaining her health, and has notched up some
remarkable successes in the few years she has been working at a larger size; multiple editorials in each of Vogue's U.S.,
Italian, French and German editions, and an appearance on the catwalk of Jean-Paul Gaultier for his Spring 2006
pret-a-porter collection. Renn was also chosen by Dolce & Gabbana to model their apparel in an international print campaign.
Renn has appeared on Oprah Winfrey's talk show to discuss her experiences, and related model health issues.
Jordan Tesfay
She began her career after winning a MODE Magazine model search competition in 1999. Tesfay was the first plus-model since
Emme, and the first black plus-size model to appear in a nation-wide advertising campaign, for CoverGirl cosmetics. She also
appeared in a minor role in the direct-to-video release of Carlito's Way: Rise to Power, released in 2005.
Whitney Thompson
She is the first plus-size model to win the reality-based TV show America's Next Top Model. Thompson began her modeling
career at age 15 in her home state of Florida, appearing several times on the cover of her local "Jacksonville" community
magazine. Thompson is 5'10" and a US size 10. She was 20 years of age at the time of her appearances on ANTM. Thompson is
the first plus-size model to appear on the cover of Seventeen magazine, on the July 2008 issue.
Shannon Marie
She began her career as a straight-size model, but achieved her greatest success after blossoming into a full-figured
beauty. Her clients included Bloomingdale's, Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, Dillard's, Addition-Elle, Onyx Nite, Quelle, and
many others. She appeared in a fashion layout in Seventeen, and her frequent showings in MODE magazine (both editorials
and ads) were met with the wildest enthusiasm. To this day she remains extremely popular with the public No other model
so perfectly embodies every feature of ideal feminine beauty, as first delineated in Classical Antiquity, and celebrated
throughout the history of Western art.
Valerie Lefkowitz
She was one of the Wilhelmina agency's top plus-size models from the time that she was discovered at the age of fifteen,
in 1996. As a junior model, she was dubbed one of the "most influential teens in America" by Teen People, and her images
graced the pages of magazines such as Seventeen, Jump, Twist, Girl, YM, and MODE. Valerie is now represented by Ford 12+
in New York. For two years, approximately from Fall 2002 to Fall 2004, while she was fuller-figured, Ms. Lefkowitz was
quite possibly the most attractive and exciting model in the plus-size industry. Valerie subsequently diminished in size
and beauty, and recently, fans felt betrayed and deeply disappointed by her appearance in advertising for a contemptible
anti-plus client. However, Valerie has recently regained her extraordinary figure, and is now at the very peak of
her beauty, so her work must be recognized. Valerie appeared on the covers of the Spring and Winter 2004 issues of Figure
magazine, as well as throughout the magazine's Summer and Fall 2004 issues, and has graced the editorial pages of Grace,
Glamour, and Real Simple. Her commercial clients at home and abroad have included Fashion Bug, Fruit of the Loom, Dockers,
Dress Barn, Target, Emme Bridal, Vassarette, Reitmans (Canada), Goody's Family Clothing, Junonia, Moonlight Bridal,
Nordstrom, David's Bridal, The Avenue, Wehkamp (Holland), and Kmart brands such as the new Jaclyn Smith Style collection,
Joe Boxer, and Basic Edition.
