    Plus-Size Women Modeling

History and Background of Plus Size Modeling :

In the past, a big body was associated with health and wealth. As a matter of fact, up until the 1960's, plus size women were lauded for their beautiful physiques. The plus size woman appeared in almost all of the fashion photographs, films, and paintings of the 1920's-1950's.

In the 1960's, plus size fashion rapidly disappeared from the covers of magazines and from the media. Many people assumed this changing trend is due to the first teenage supermodel, Twiggy. Ironically, Twiggy's name suited her slender frame quite well. Instead of plus size blouses, plus size dresses, and skirts, Twiggy wore slinky dresses which hugged her small frame. In 1967, Marshall McLuhan boldly said: "Twiggy is an X-ray, not a picture".

Unlike plus size women, who portray a picture of health and happiness, Twiggy looked ill due to her extremely low weight. Unfortunately, women all over the European countries and America quickly became unhappy with their bodies and fashion choices. Clothes that were made for slim girls were bright, fashionable, and affordable. There were very little options for plus size women.

Then, as the new millennium approached, the world watched in shock as reality television began sharing the private lives of these models. Being thin wasn't as glitzy, glamorous, and easy as it seemed. When the cameras weren't rolling and the photographers weren't around, many of these models struggled to stay thin. Plus size women were finally able to let out a sign of relief. In a fashion-conscious world that oppressed plus size women for so long, were finally recognized as being healthier than the small-framed models. But, at what cost? How many plus size women developed eating disorders in their pursuits of thinner bodies? We may never know.

In 2002, the world tuned in to watch the shocking reality show the "Anna Nicole Show". Although Anna Nicole's life looked disastrous, but it is true that she had gone from a slim Guess model in the 90's to a plus size women over the course of 10 years. She eventually experienced success, not only from her reality show, but as a plus size clothing designer and model. Unfortunately, Anna Nicole Smith died as a result of a medical overdose. Her sudden death, as well as her son's, keeps several factors under mystery.

Many people have the opinion that Anna Nicole Smith was the first famous plus size model. But as there is a dispute, therefore Emme (Melissa) Aronson is recognized as the first plus size model by many reputed members of the fashion world, and Angellika is the first plus-size model that was conveyed into the modeling Hall of Fame.

Women, finally, have been recognized and accepted in every shape and form. Beauty is no longer defined by single digit clothing sizes. Plus size women are beautiful and deserve the opportunity to model and feel comfortable in their own shape. A plus size model may be of big body frame but should have proportionate figure and well defined waist.

Now plus size model is a term internationally applied to a woman who is engaged primarily in modeling garments that are designed and marketed specifically for larger body sizes and types. These models are also increasingly engaging in work that is not strictly related to selling clothing, i.e. body acceptance imagery, lifestyle and advertising, beauty/cosmetic products, pharmaceuticals, shoes, etc. As such, plus size models often do not wear garments designed and marketed as plus-size clothing. This is especially true of magazine editorials.

The type of work that plus size models engage in is of comparable variety to that of their smaller sized counterparts. Advertising campaigns, magazine editorials, catwalk work, live-TV work and commercials, etc. comprise the variety of work available. Increasingly, plus-size models are also being employed by the media to stimulate debate on healthy self-esteem and body image, especially regarding struggles with eating disorders.

How To Become a Plus Size Model :

The requirements for plus size models are no different from those of high-fashion models, excepting in larger overall body frame; they must have excellent skin, hair and teeth, and emote well to the camera. If you're a photogenic, self-confident and fit size 12 to 16, plus size modeling may well be in your future. Before you pack your bags for modeling, however, consider some practical tips on breaking into the industry.

Step 1

Be proactive. Visit your local department store and offer your services for in-store modeling. Many stores have models walk the floor in select outfits as a way to promote the business. They also need models for special events and fashion shows.

Step 2

Call the top three modeling agencies in the largest town or city near you. Ask if they represent plus-size models. If so, schedule time to meet with them during their next open call for full-figure women.

Step 3

Dress simply and wear little or no makeup when visiting agents. Bring four photographs: full-length shot of your body in a swimsuit (front, back and side view) and a facial close-up. Keep your hair and makeup simple in the photographs, and choose subtle colors that highlight your natural beauty.

Step 4

Do not leave your job. Although plus-size modeling is a lucrative business, it's also very competitive and will challenge your self-esteem on a regular basis. Build a foundation at the local level, in which a full-time career may flourish.

Step 5

Focus on you. Depending on the trends and whims of the fashion industry, you may not possess the right look every time. Be yourself and allow opportunities to present them without changing your appearance drastically to accommodate what's of the moment.

Step 6

Persevere! Get out there and sell yourself. Keep your name in the minds and Rolodexes of those who can move your career forward. Always remain flexible during the highs and the lows.

Step 7

Speak up. As a full-figure beauty, you have the power to influence stores, fashion houses and magazines. With the majority of American women over a size 12, there is a huge market to woo. You might create a position for yourself by reinforcing the need for diversity in runway shows and magazine editorials.

Note :

Maintain your figure and do exercise regularly. Do not waste money on false advertisements. Keep away from volatile modeling scouts. Do not send your photo or identity to unknown person.
